Rory McIlroy has questioned why gamers wouldn’t wish to return to play on the PGA Tour amid uncertainty over the way forward for LIV Golf, bluntly saying “if you don’t want to play here, I think that says something about you”.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Funding Fund (PIF) confirmed final month that it’s going to finish its funding for LIV Golf on the finish of the 2026 season, with the breakaway league now looking for various long-time funding to safe its future.
Talking after he surged into competition on the Truist Championship on Friday with a second-round 67, McIlroy was requested for his tackle the LIV scenario and the potential pathways again for gamers to the established excursions.
“It’s a question if they do want to come back,” mentioned McIlroy.
“Clearly we have now seen the quotes over the previous couple of days. And, , it looks as if a few of the guys, if… once more, all of it relies on what occurs to LIV.
“If it’s a state of affairs the place they’ve the choice to return again and play on the standard excursions, I believe (PGA Tour CEO) Brian Rolapp has mentioned something that makes this tour stronger, something that makes the DP World Tour stronger, I believe everybody needs to be open to that.
“That is simply good enterprise follow.
“But again, I think there’s going to be a lot of sort of bridges to cross to get there, just because, you know, obviously the guys over there are under contract and if they are able to keep it going and get a schedule together next year, it seems like those guys are still going to play the majority of their golf on LIV, in whatever form it takes.”
McIlroy, initially an arch critic of the LIV breakaway in 2022 earlier than subsequently softening his stance, added: “I was probably too judgemental with the guys that went because I was seeing it from my point of view and maybe not seeing it from other points of view.
“I am not going to guage anybody for not eager to play on the PGA Tour.
“I don’t know, does that mean that they go play DP World Tour, maybe; if that’s a pathway, that would make the DP World Tour stronger, and I would be delighted with that because that’s my home tour at the end of the day.
“However If you wish to be essentially the most aggressive golfer you could be, that is the place to be. And when you do not wish to play right here, I believe that claims one thing about you.”
