WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Consultant Mike Turner mentioned on Wednesday he’ll now not function chairman of the Home Intelligence Committee after almost two years.
In accordance with media experiences, U.S. Home Speaker Mike Johnson eliminated Turner from the position.
“Under my leadership, we restored the integrity of the Committee and returned its mission to its core focus of national security. The threat from our adversaries is real and requires serious deliberations,” Turner mentioned in an announcement.
Turner, who mentioned he was proud to have served as chairman of the panel, will function senior member of the Home Armed Providers Committee.
He instructed CBS Information that Johnson cited “concerns from Mar-a-Lago,” referring to the President-elect Donald Trump’s Florida property, as a purpose for his elimination.
Nonetheless, Johnson mentioned he eliminated Turner as a result of “we just need fresh horses in some of these places,” including that it was not a Trump determination.
“This is a House decision, and this is no slight whatsoever to our outgoing chairman. He did a great job,” Johnson instructed reporters, based on a CNN reporter.
He mentioned Turner’s successor can be introduced on Thursday, based on CNN.
Representatives for Johnson didn’t instantly reply to requests for remark.
Turner has served as chairman of the intelligence panel since January 2023.
The chairman of the panel is amongst eight congressional leaders referred to as the Gang of Eight who’re briefed on categorised intelligence issues.
