Police have confirmed a “terrorist threat” despatched to St Helens’ Instagram account was a hoax after they have been pressured to go away Hull KR’s Sewell Group Craven Park beneath a police escort on Saturday.
Cops stood close to the group coach as gamers and employees departed the bottom shortly after the membership’s 20-12 Tremendous League semi-final play-off defeat.
A press release from Merseyside Police learn: “We can confirm that we are investigating an incident of malicious communications reported by St Helens Rugby Club yesterday (Saturday 4 October).
“At round 6.45pm, we acquired a report that the membership had acquired a threating message to its social media account whereas they have been enjoying a match in Hull.
“Officers carried out enquiries and confirmed it was a hoax. Reassurance was provided to the squad before they left the ground following the match.”
Saints head coach Paul Wellens was seen chatting with law enforcement officials after the full-time whistle.
A police officer was stood outdoors the coach for the gamers and employees to get on, with a cordon of eight stationed across the coach earlier.
The group bus was then given a police escort as they departed the stadium.
A spokesperson for the membership mentioned within the post-match press convention: “The club had a terrorist threat sent to the Saints’ Instagram account.
“It was reported to the St Helens Floor Security Officer they usually spoke to Hull KR’s Floor Security Officer. They’re treating it with the utmost seriousness.”
