WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Joe Biden stated on Sunday he thought it was terrible that President-elect Donald Trump was attempting to eliminate birthright citizenship in the US.
Talking to reporters on the White Home, Biden stated the transition to Trump’s authorities appeared to be going easily, although he stated he thought there was an issue with Trump’s workforce internally associated to the handover.
Requested forward of the anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol whether or not he nonetheless thought Trump was a menace to democracy, Biden stated he thought what Trump did was a “genuine threat to democracy.”
Trump falsely claimed he had received the 2020 election and urged his supporters to go to the Capitol that day.
“It should not be rewritten,” Biden stated about Jan. 6. “I don’t think it should be forgotten.”
Biden stated white supremacy was considered one of many threats to the US.
“We are the most extensive multicultural nation in the world. It’s the reason why we’re so strong. It’s the reason why we’re who we are,” Biden stated.
Trump advised NBC final month he plans to take government motion on his first day in workplace to attempt to finish birthright citizenship, which confers citizenship on anybody born within the U.S. no matter their mother and father’ immigration standing.
“The idea we’re going to change a constitutional birthright – if you’re born in the country … you’re not a citizen? What’s going on?” Biden stated.
Biden, a Democrat, criticized Trump, a Republican, for encouraging lawmakers to not vote for a bipartisan immigration invoice Biden supported to strengthen border enforcement. “It’s ridiculous. It’s ridiculous,” Biden stated.
Trump used immigration as a key problem to rally his base within the 2024 election, which he received, prevailing over Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee.
