WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Greater than 30 pilot whales that stranded themselves on a seashore in New Zealand had been safely returned to the ocean after conservation employees and residents helped to refloat them by lifting them on sheets. 4 of the pilot whales died, New Zealand’s conservation company mentioned.

New Zealand is a whale stranding hotspot and pilot whales are particularly prolific stranders.

A crew was monitoring Ruakākā Seashore close to town of Whangārei in New Zealand’s north on Monday to make sure there have been no indicators of the whales saved Sunday stranding once more, the Division of Conservation advised The Related Press. The company praised as “incredible” the efforts made by lots of of individuals to assist save the foundering pod.

“It’s amazing to witness the genuine care and compassion people have shown toward these magnificent animals,” Joel Lauterbach, a Division of Conservation spokesperson, mentioned in a press release. “This response demonstrates the deep connection we all share with our marine environment.”
