Hillsin: Coach Chris Honour needed to make ‘good impression’ says BHA prosecutor

Coach Chris Honour took half in a conspiracy to forestall Hillsin from profitable
at Worcester in July 2023 on the understanding he could be despatched extra horses by the father-in-law of a Premier League footballer, a disciplinary panel was informed on Wednesday.

Honour, 46, who on the time skilled Hillsin, is considered one of three people charged with intentionally stopping the horse from profitable the Wacky Weekender Pageant Pitchcroft Twenty first-Twenty third July Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle together with former jockey Dylan Kitts and John Higgins, an affiliate of proprietor Alan Clegg.

Honour and Higgins deny all the costs, whereas Kitts has already admitted to stopping the horse from working on its deserves. Clegg has not been accused of any wrongdoing.

Honour had been dealing much more steadily with Higgins than Clegg since Hillsin had moved to the yard, stating he believed all his correspondence with Higgins was being shared with Clegg.

British Horseracing Authority barrister Louis Weston questioned Honour a few day Hillsin was on account of run at Newton Abbot on June 27 2023 when the horse acquired free on the morning of the race and was unable to run.

Weston stated that Honour felt embarrassed about what had occurred that day and was eager to make an excellent impression so went together with the plan.

Honour and Kitts had by no means met previous to assembly pre-race.

Kitts had informed the listening to already that Higgins had informed him “under no ******* circumstances was that horse to win”.

Weston stated: “Here’s a man dangling future riches. You have made a cock-up on your first trial and because of that you were going to want to make a good impression.

“You knew he [Higgins] was a gambler, you knew he wager on horses and also you knew he had a factor about ‘lacking the value’. He was suspicious that one other proprietor in your yard would possibly get intelligence concerning the horse and get a greater worth.”

Honour, who told the panel at the beginning of Wednesday’s hearing that he believed he had undiagnosed dyslexia and had a difficulty remembering conversations and names, disagreed wholeheartedly with Weston.

Honour, who explained his mobile phone signal was not very strong by way of an explanation for the number of phone calls between himself and Higgins which made it necessary to keep ringing him back, did admit that he was someone who “tried to appease” people.

As Honour has also been charged with not giving Kitts sufficient instructions and ‘encouraging Kitts to give a stopping ride’, Weston pushed him on the instructions he had given to Kitts which he said were good enough for any ‘trying’ jockey.

Honour said: “I by no means stated maintain the horse to the road, I’ve by no means informed anyone at what level they go for the road – they’re jockeys and they’re paid to do a job. They know methods to race. I could not have achieved any extra from my perspective.”

Regarding what he said in the initial stewards’ inquiry, Honour said that in trying to help Kitts he had gone too far.

“I did an excessive amount of to assist him,” said Honour. “I went in with the mindset to assist the lad and on the time I did assume the horse had hung [in the race] however over time I’ve believed that much less and fewer.

“I didn’t want to get anyone in trouble, as that’s not me.

“I used to be fallacious, however I do not consider I used to be making an attempt to be deceptive, I used to be making an attempt to work with what I might see. So that you can say that I used to be deceptive, that was by no means my intention.”

When giving his evidence on Tuesday Kitts had said he did not act alone but in defence of Honour his barrister Roderick Moore said the only evidence against his client were Kitts’ allegations.

Moore said: “We are saying Mr Kitts has just about no credibility and the panel should be extraordinarily cautious of accepting something he says. He has informed various lies.”

Higgins, 79, shouldn’t be in attendance on the listening to on account of unwell well being and has refused to cooperate with the BHA. Consequently he was positioned on the exclusion checklist in March 2024, alongside along with his son-in-law Ashley Barnes.

All proof has now been heard with submissions to be made on Monday.
