CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuela’s authorities “dramatically intensified” efforts to crush peaceable protest and ramped up its repressive equipment following the nation’s presidential election in July, in keeping with a report from a UN fact-finding mission revealed Tuesday.

Venezuelan authorities acted to dismantle and demobilize the opposition, inhibit the dissemination of unbiased data and significant opinions, and forestall peaceable protests in a “conscious and deliberate” method, the report stated.

“We are witnessing an intensification of the state’s repressive machinery in response to what it perceives as critical views, opposition or dissent,” stated Marta Valinas, chair of the fact-finding mission.
