ROME — President Trump’s threats to impose new tariffs on European items has precipitated People to instantly stockpile their favourite Italian wines — particularly the glowing wine, Prosecco.

U.S. imports of Italian wine — 90% of that Prosecco — skyrocketed by 41% in November following Trump’s election, in response to the Union of Italian Wines commerce affiliation.

Lamberto Frescobaldi, the president of the commerce affiliation, says the information is obvious: “Americans are not willing to give up on our wines.” This peak in orders is unprecedented within the historical past of Italy’s glowing wine exports for the month of November, the affiliation says.

Avocados from Mexico are displayed for sale at a Whole Foods store in New York City on Feb. 03, 2025. Trump has put on hold a planned 25% tariff on Mexican imports.

Italian wine growers will not be the one ones involved concerning the potential new tariff regime. The top of Italy’s vogue chamber has appealed to the Italian authorities to do what it may possibly to guard the nation’s second-largest business.

Vogue generates 5% of Italy’s GDP and employs 1.2 million folks. Italy exported 4.6 billion euros ($4.75 billion) value of luxurious vogue — attire, leather-based items, jewellery, eye glasses and footwear — to america through the first 10 months of final 12 months.

“If Trump penalizes the second industry in Italy, it is a pretty hostile declaration,” Carlo Capasa, the president of the Italian Nationwide Vogue Chamber, mentioned this week.

Frescobaldi of the Union of Italian Wines can also be apprehensive. In a assertion posted on the commerce affiliation’s web site, he appealed to Italian authorities to present “maximum attention” to the specter of U.S. import tariffs, warning that this matter may show to be “decisive for the commercial future of wine.”
