New York Metropolis Mayor Eric Adams says he’s open to deporting migrants who’ve been charged with crimes forward of a gathering with President-elect Donald Trump’s new Border Czar Tom Homan.

Talking to reporters on Tuesday, Adams mentioned he has requested a gathering with Homan to speak concerning the incoming Trump administration’s plans for coping with the inflow of immigrants which have overwhelmed the town’s emergency shelter system. He mentioned he doesn’t plan to battle Trump’s pledges to deport criminals illegally dwelling in America.

“I would love to sit down with the border czar and hear his thoughts on how we are going to address those who are harming our citizens,” the Democrat informed reporters. “I’m going to be working with this administration.”

Adams mentioned he helps the deportation of migrants accused of crimes, an obvious shift in his place that deportations must be performed solely after a felony suspect is convicted of a criminal offense or serves a jail sentence.

“My position is people who commit crimes in our city, you have abdicated your right to be in our city and I am open to figure out the best way to address that,” he mentioned. “Those who are here committing crimes, robberies, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country.”

Homan has mentioned the Trump administration might be looking for to withhold federal funding from sanctuary cities similar to New York, and has warned that native leaders received’t have the ability to cease the feds from deporting migrant criminals.

“If we can’t get assistance from New York City, we may have to double the number of agents we send to New York City,” Homan informed Fox Information not too long ago. “Because we’re going to do the job with you or without you.”

New York Metropolis has had an inflow of greater than 200,000 asylum seekers amid a historic surge of immigration alongside the U.S.-Mexico border over the previous two years. Greater than 56,000 migrants presently underneath the town’s care.

Adams mentioned Tuesday the town has already spent greater than $6.4 billion on housing, meals and different requirements for greater than 200,000 migrants, lots of whom have been bused to the town from the southern border.
