The previous captain of Sheffield United Girls instructed an inquest that she believes the principle cause for Maddy Cusack’s decline in psychological well being was her girlfriend shifting away.
Chesterfield Coroner’s Court docket heard that Cusack’s household despatched a written grievance in regards to the head coach of the crew, Jonathan Morgan, outlining points allegedly stemming from her relationship with him.

On Wednesday, Sophie Barker, who was the captain of the ladies’s crew on the time, stated she instructed the participant’s household that “Maddy would still be here” if her girlfriend Grace Riglar had not moved from United to a special soccer membership.
Barker stated: “When Maddy found out Grace was going to go so far away, that affected Maddy. She was infatuated with Grace.
“She felt Grace was leaving her – I needed to reassure her that Grace was simply shifting – it did not imply that they had break up or something like that.”

The inquest heard that Cusack was “prepared to offer Morgan one other probability” and “get her head down”.
Cusack then did not discuss any problems related to Morgan with Barker, the inquest heard.
Barker told the court: “She had both hid it from me or did not inform me as a result of she knew I’d say one thing to Jonathan. Maddy actually did not like confrontation – she knew I’d have gone and confronted him about it.”
The inquest heard on Tuesday that Cusack thought the coach was playing “thoughts video games” with her, and had made comments about her weight and relationship with Riglar.
In June 2023, Barker said her colleague became “quieter” and “extra reserved”, adding: “She turned up and went residence.
“She didn’t really contribute to much. It was a completely different person to the Maddy that was the season before, where she was very bubbly.”
Francesca Carr, who was then the pinnacle physiotherapist for United’s girls’s crew, instructed the inquest that she didn’t have considerations Cusack would hurt herself.
She instructed the coroner: “There were players I had more concerns about from a mental health or a coping point of view.”
However Carr did recall Cusack being “heartbroken” on one event when she went to the unsuitable coaching floor.
The physio instructed the inquest: “I said ‘we are at this one’ and she just started crying on the phone.
“It simply wasn’t a standard response for me. I simply thought that response is extreme for what occurred. I do know that emotional response is an indication.”
The inquest previously heard that Cusack thought Morgan made a “private assault” on her by not putting her in the starting line-up for matches.
Morgan, who is representing himself in the inquest, asked Carr if the “collaborative choice” not to put Cusack in the starting line-up for his first competitive game at the club was in her “greatest pursuits” because of an injury to her ankle.
Carr replied: “I feel her not enjoying then, sure, was in her greatest pursuits.”
She added: “Maddy, in my skilled opinion, pushed too exhausting too early on to try to get again match.”
Asked by Joseph O’Brien KC, who represents Sheffield United, whether she heard Cusack complain about Morgan in the summer of 2023, Carr replied: “No I did not.”
