PARIS (Reuters) -The Worldwide Olympic Committee apologised to South Korea on Saturday after its delegation of athletes have been launched as from rival North Korea on the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.
South Korea’s vice minister for sports activities and tradition, Jang Mi-ran, who was in Paris, stated IOC President Thomas Bach deliberate to talk with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to convey an apology.
“It was clearly deeply regrettable and we apologise wholeheartedly,” IOC spokesperson Mark Adams informed a press convention on Saturday.
South Korea’s Nationwide Olympic Committee instantly referred the incident to the Video games’ organisers and requested that the error is not going to be repeated.
South Korea’s delegation contains 143 athletes competing in 21 occasions. North Korea, which is returning to the Video games for the primary time since Rio 2016, has despatched 16 athletes.
South Korean social media customers expressed dismay over the incident and a few reacted harshly to the IOC’s one-sentence apology saying it was not honest.
The 2 Koreas have seen tensions rise over the North’s weapons programmes and are delicate over their political integrity, particularly Pyongyang, which overtly exhibits irritation when it’s not referred to by its official identify.
