Sales engineers specialize in selling technologically and scientifically advanced products, with the majority of their employment coming from computer system design and related services industry, which employs nearly 11,000 sales engineers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, the employment of sales engineers is expected to grow by 8% from 2020 to 2030, which is about the same rate of growth as the average for all occupations.

According to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Employment Statistics, as of 2020, the average income of sales engineers is $117,270, more than double the national average for all occupations, $56,310. The highest-paying industry for sales engineers is computer and peripheral equipment manufacturing, where the mean annual income for sales engineers is $149,810. The states with the highest sales engineer salaries are geographically a very mixed bunch, with upper South states like Maryland and Virginia coming in as the No. 1 and No. 2 highest-paying states, alongside Mountain and upper Midwest states like Idaho and South Dakota coming in as the No. 5 and No. 6 best-paying states.

The bottom 10 states where average sales engineer salaries are lowest are an interesting mix of states from the Midwest, South, West Coast and Northeast. Hawaii, which typically has some of the highest incomes for jobs — and highest cost of living — actually has the lowest average sales engineer salary at $81,030.
