Cobra Kai headlines a month of new content at Netflix.
Well time flies when . . . well honestly whether or not you’re having fun, time seems to fly. We’re somehow already almost to December, and then on to 2022 which, we hope, will be a step up from the last couple pandemic-tainted years.
Along with the usual slate of third-party movies—Tremors, Wild Things, The Final Destination—there are some very exciting Netflix Originals coming next month. Here are a few you should definitely keep an eye on. Skip below for the full list of December content. Happy Thanksgiving!
Power Of The Dog (Dec 1st)
The Power Of The Dog stars Benedict Cumberbatch as rancher Phil Burbank, Jesse Plemons as his brother George and Kirsten Dunst as widow Rose Gordon. The film, directed by Jane Campion, takes place in Montana in 1925. George ends up marrying Rose which is kind of funny since Plemmons and Durst were husband and wife in Season 2 of Fargo, so they’ve had some practice.
This had a limited theatrical run and has already won awards (Best Direction at the Venice Film Festival where it premiered) and acclaim from critics (95% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences were less enthusiastic with a current 79% viewer score). It sounds kind of depressing but is apparently beautifully shot.
Lost In Space Season 3 (Dec 1st)
The third and final season of Lost In Space lands on December 1st. This is one show I’ve never gotten into for some reason. Seems like it would be right up my alley but there’s always so much to watch this one has never made the cut. For those of you who’ve seen it, is it any good? Worth catching up on? The Unforgivable (Dec 10th)
Sandra Bullock returns to Netflix but not for a Bird Box sequel. She stars in The Unforgivable, a film about a woman who gets out of prison after serving a lengthy sentence for a violent crime and tries to readjust to life on the outside. Directed by German director Nora Fingscheidt, the film is based on the award-winning 2009 British miniseries Unforgiven.
The Witcher Season 2 (Dec 17th)
Henry Cavill reprises his role as Geralt of Rivia in Netflix’s The Witcher, a series based on the novels of Polish author Andrzej “I Can Never Remember How To Spell His Name” Sapkowski. The show is also clearly inspired by the video game series from CD Projekt Red, adopting many similar aesthetics and even a similar soundtrack. I loved the first (somewhat divisive) season and I’m looking forward to the more chronologically coherent Season 2.
Don’t Look Up (Dec 24th)
A professor (DiCaprio) and a PhD student (Lawrence) try to warn humanity about an incoming comet set to destroy the planet. The sci-fi disaster comedy is directed by The Big Short’s Adam McKay and features a star-studded ensemble cast including Timothée Chalamet, Ariana Grande, Jonah Hill, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Ron Perlman, Tyler Perry, Kid Cudi, and the list goes on.
Cobra Kai Season 4 (Dec 31st)
Cobra Kai returns for a fourth season. This time around Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka) and Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) have teamed up to take on the new Cobra Kai, now formally under the ruthless leadership of John Kreese (Martin Kove). I really love this show and I’m definitely looking forward to seeing the odd couple try to lead their students together. What could go wrong? Hopefully the fourth season doesn’t get too serious, though. This show is at its best when it keeps things lighter.
