‘Eternals’ Post-Credit Scene: Who Is The Mysterious Voice Talking To Kit Harrington?

There are several big question marks left at the end of Eternals, the latest MCU film to hit theaters and another in the Marvel franchise that’s releasing in theaters before coming to Disney Plus.

That’s a bummer for anyone who wants to stream the movie at home, but it’s definitely a theater movie and absolutely worth going to (my review is incoming, but the critics are wrong about this one).

There are two post-credits scenes in the film. Spoilers follow.

The second of these scenes features Kit Harrington’s character Dane Whitman, a seemingly normal love interest of Sersi (Gemma Chan). At the end of the film he’s about to come clean about his “complicated family” when she’s whisked away by Arishem, a powerful Celestial.

We get a glimpse into this secret in the final post-credits scene, as Whitman opens a box to reveal a glimmering black sword. He’s visibly stressed out about whether or not take up the blade and when he goes to touch it we suddenly hear a voice from off-screen.

The audience when I saw the film was divided on who this was. One person thought it was Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury. Others said it was clearly the Watcher—Jeffrey Wright’s character from the animated What If…? series on Disney Plus.

MORE FOR YOU

Neither of these is the case. The mysterious voice belongs to the new Blade, played by the wonderful Mahershala Ali. So it’s Blade who asks Whitman if he’s sure he wants to pick up the sword—which, we can presume, will have some pros and cons.

This is all a setup for Whitman becoming Black Knight. The previous Black Knight was Whitman’s uncle who we hear about briefly in the film when Sersi tells Whitman that he should “make up” with his uncle now (before the world ends). In the comics, Whitman’s uncle is a supervillain, and I’m sure we’ll learn more about that when Black Knight enters the MCU in the not so distant future.

So that’s the mystery voice and the story behind Harrington’s new MCU character. It’s all exciting stuff. A new Blade movie is very exciting. Wesley Snipes was great as the Daywalker, but it’ll be really cool to see Ali’s take on the role. And Harrington has plenty of practice with a sword thanks to his part in Game of Thrones.
