THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, India (Reuters) -No less than 41 folks had been killed and scores injured after landslides within the hills of India’s southern Kerala state, native media reported, with rescue operations obstructed after a predominant bridge collapsed within the area.

State Well being Minister Veena George mentioned that over 70 folks had been injured and the Indian Categorical reported that many individuals are more likely to have been washed away within the Chaliyar river. 

“The situation is serious. The government has pressed all agencies into rescue,” state Forest Minister A Ok Saseendran instructed Reuters after the landslides within the Wayanad district of the state. Extra rain was predicted by the day.

The military was roped in to construct a short lived bridge after a bridge within the district that linked the affected space, principally tea and cardamom estates, to the closest city of Chooralmala was destroyed, Saseendran added.

Tv visuals confirmed aid personnel making their method by rocks and uprooted bushes as muddy water gushed by, with many homes destroyed.  

One man was seen struggling to free himself after being caught in chest-high mud for hours, as rescue staff weren’t in a position to attain him regardless of a number of efforts.

Rashid Padikkalparamban, a resident concerned within the aid efforts, mentioned there have been a minimum of three landslides within the space beginning round midnight, which washed away the bridge connecting the affected space, the Mundakkai estates, to Chooralmala.

“Many people who were working in the estates and staying in makeshift tents inside are feared trapped or missing,” he mentioned.
