Former world champion Canelo Alvarez is about to battle newly topped super-middleweight title-holder Christian Mbilli within the autumn, says High Rank president Todd duBoef.
Canelo is seeking to bounce again from a disappointing defeat to Terence Crawford final September, a battle that ended his reign because the undisputed super-middleweight champion.
The undefeated Mbilli was elevated to WBC super-middleweight champion after Crawford retired and has been gunning for a battle with one among boxing’s largest stars in Canelo – a contest which Mbilli’s promoter says is about to occur.
“We’ve worked with our partners in Canada [Eye of the Tiger, which co-promotes Mbilli],” duBoef advised Sky Sports activities. “That’s the fight that’s being targeted.
“They’re speaking concerning the fall [for it to take place].”
In addition to providing Alvarez a direct return to world title competitors, the bout may also be an attractive mix of types. Mbili – who boasts explosive energy and harbours a status as one of many division’s extra aggressive fighters – has been billed as the proper opponent for Canelo, whose attribute counter-punches financial institution on ill-fated swings from his opponents.
“I think stylistically for both guys, it’s a good fight. Canelo needs [Mbilli’s style] too. He needs a guy that’s going to come to him – that’s where he really excels,” duBoef stated.
“[Canelo’s] got nothing to lose, only to gain. And we don’t know how many more days Canelo’s got left.
“That is a wonderful stylistic battle. You may see the types come collectively.”
The Ring journal had beforehand reported that the battle is about to headline a Riyadh Season occasion and happen in Saudi Arabia on September 12, although neither the date nor the situation of the battle have been formally confirmed.
