The reign of Don’t Look Up has ended on Netflix’s Top 10 charts, which resulted in some particularly annoying discourse between critics and filmmakers and climate scientists, albeit the film is worth watching all the same. It’s now been replaced by something that’s bound to be less controversial, the fourth season of Cobra Kai.
Cobra Kai has instantly taken the top spot from Don’t Look Up the day it debuted, showing more strength than say, Emily in Paris when that show arrived for its second season, and never made it to #1 past The Witcher or Don’t Look Up.
The fourth season of Cobra Kai has Johnny and Daniel finally teaming up to take on a larger foe, Crease, combining their student pools in an effort to win the local tournament and drive him out of town. The fourth season has perfect 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% from fans, so everyone clearly still loves the series after all this time.
I’ve noticed that Cobra Kai kind of keeps recycling the same plotlines year after year (Johnny is mad that Daniel is teaching his kid something, Tory needs help from an adult, a wimpy kid gets tougher with karate, Johnny and Daniel come to blows, a bad guy from a past Karate Kid movie shows up), and yet it doesn’t really matter because the cast and concept is so enjoyable, you don’t actually mind all the same storylines appearing, just slightly tweaked. I certainly don’t.
MORE FOR YOU
As for Don’t Look Up, it may start to slide down the charts, but it has still performed extremely well for Netflix, and will certainly be inside its top 10 original movies for viewership ever, if not inside the top 5. Not bad for a movie that functions entirely as a climate change allegory rather than a splashy heist film like Red Notice. If there’s another movie that could soon pass it, that might The Lost Daughter, starring Oscar winner Olivia Coleman, which debuted yesterday and is creeping up the charts. I watched it over New Year’s Eve and while it was good, it wasn’t exactly uh, the most uplifting way to start the new year.
I would expect Cobra Kai to remain on top of the charts for a while. It’s turned into one of Netflix’s most popular series and I’m not sure what’s coming out in the next few weeks that would move it. My guess is nothing really until possibly Too Hot To Handle season 3 on January 19, or if not that, then definitely Ozark season 4 on January 21.
If you’ve missed Cobra Kai so far, it’s a great time to check it out and get caught up. And I still do recommend Don’t Look Up, despite some of my misgivings with it.
