The holiday season is upon us, and that means it’s time for Christmas cheer, holiday songs, and heartwarming surprises. Now, two of the biggest stars in the music world and one of the most successful names in late-night TV are teaming up to provide all three in one tune.
Ariana Grande, Megan Thee Stallion and Jimmy Fallon are dropping a single at midnight (December 7) called “It Was A… (Masked Christmas).” The tune is reportedly also coming with a music video, and it seems like it’s going to be marketed as not just a fun collaboration for Fallon’s show, but a proper single.
The news was shared by Fallon himself on Twitter, with the late-night host writing, “Guys. I can’t believe I’m typing this but…” and then divulging the details. Grande responded, saying, “the most fun ever. love you !!! both so much,” and Stallion did the same, commenting simply, “Love y’all.”
The three musicians have never worked together before on an official release, and with such popular figures attached, it’s bound to be a success from the moment it arrives. The tune arrives in time to make a play for Billboard chart dominance, as holiday-related smashes always perform exceptionally well this time of year. Currently, four beloved carols are present inside the top 10 on the Hot 100, with tracks by Mariah Carey (“All I Want for Christmas is You,” No. 3), Brenda Lee (“Rockin Around the Christmas Tree,” No. 4), Bobby Helms (“Jingle Bell Rock,” No. 5) and Burl Ives (“A Holly Jolly Christmas,” No. 7) bolting into the highest tier on the tally.
MORE FOR YOU
“It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” will be Grande’s first single since teaming up with The Weeknd for his re-released cut “Save Your Tears.” That smash shot right to No. 1 on the Hot 100 once the future Wicked star joined in on the fun. Stallion has been very busy throughout 2021, doling out tunes on her own and with fellow musicians like Lil Baby (“On Me”), Ozuna, DJ Snake and Lisa (“SG”) and even BTS (“Butter”), with whom she recently performed during their sold-out run of shows in Los Angeles, CA.
While Fallon is known primarily as an actor from Saturday Night Live and a host from his own namesake The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, he has also enjoyed some success in the music world. He scored a top 40 hit on the Hot 100 several years ago alongside Black Eyed Peas frontman Will.I.Am with “Ew!,” which originated in a sketch for his own program. “It Was A… (Masked Christmas)” marks Fallon’s first single release in seven years.
