What are three ways I can future-proof my job? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.
Answer by April Rinne, Founder & Chief Change Navigator at April Worldwide, on Quora:
- Recognize that the future of work is not merely about “jobs.” Having a job is only one of myriad ways you can work, earn income, create a livelihood, develop a professional identity, find meaning, and contribute to society.
- Remember that, insofar as any job is “given” to you by someone else, remember, it can be taken away — even if you do great work, love what you do, etc. Know how to create your own livelihood that no one can take from you. (You may need to adapt, of course, but you’ll be in the driver’s seat.)
- Shift how you think about your career: from “a path to pursue” to “your unique portfolio to create!” The future of work is not linear, and the era of “climbing the ladder” is giving way. Portfolio careers are on the rise. A portfolio career does *not* mean hustling and doing a hundred different things at once. It means curating your skills, roles (from traditional jobs to self-employment, volunteering, and beyond), and capabilities in ways that open up new opportunities. It means doing what you’re best at (like an artist’s portfolio), diversifying your risk (like an investor’s portfolio), and becoming more resilient — more future-proof — full stop.
